Hontai Yoshin Ryu is a traditional Japanese martial art that has been passed on from generation to generation since its beginnings in the 17th century. Its founder, Takagi Oriemon Shigenobu, created this art after years of studying various martial arts styles, among them Jujutsu, Kenjutsu and Naginatajutsu. He combined the most effective techniques from each style in order to create this school, which at that time was still called Takagi Ryu.

Hontai Yoshin Ryu belongs to the family of Takagi-Ryu styles. The training system centres on Jūjutsu, unarmed combat against armed or unarmed opponents, and includes striking, joint-locking and throwing techniques.

In Switzerland

Today there are schools in various countries outside Japan, for example in Italy, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

In Switzerland there is no official Hontai Yoshin Ryu school. There is, however, the possibility of training at the sister school, which is practically identical: Motoha Yoshin Ryu — it likewise belongs to the family of Takagi-Ryu styles.

The essence

The essence of Hontai Yoshin Ryu lies in its concentration on efficient and effective techniques and in the emphasis on developing the practitioner's physical and mental strength. The art comprises a broad range of techniques, among them strikes, throws, joint locks and pressure points, which can be used both in self-defence and in combat.

One of the unique aspects of Hontai Yoshin Ryu is the use of Kata, that is, of prescribed movement patterns, as a means of teaching and practising techniques. The Kata are designed to simulate real situations and to help practitioners develop the muscle memory they need in order to carry out techniques instinctively.

Another important aspect of Hontai Yoshin Ryu is the cultivation of the practitioner's character and mental strength. The art places great weight on discipline, respect and modesty, which are indispensable for anyone who wishes to master this art. Through rigorous training and adherence to these principles the practitioner can develop not only physical strength but also a strong spirit and a calm mind.

Today Hontai Yoshin Ryu is practised all over the world, and its techniques have been adapted and integrated into other martial arts styles. The art has nevertheless remained true to its roots, and practitioners continue to honour the traditions and teachings of its founder.
